11.12.09 HR Happy Hour Blog Talk Radio Show Featuring the Fistful of Talent Crew

If you haven’t been paying attention lately, there’s a lot of cool people doing some new and innovative things in the HR/Recruiting/Talent Management space and one of those things is a BlogTalk Radio show hosted by Steve Boese and Shauna Moerke (the HR Minion) called HR Happy Hour.

081e2042-cfa8-455c-bdf6-4832ba4b40e9hr_happy_hour Started as an opportunity for HR pros to chat, vent and discuss the burning issues of the day,the HR Happy Hour has turned into a “must attend” event bi-monthly (sort of) on Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. EST. I’ve been a guest previously on Episode 10 – The Job Seeker’s Show and was also fortunate to be in attendance when the show went on the road recently for two live broadcasts – Episode 17 for the Fail Spectacularly party in Chicago (put on by Laurie Ruettimann of Punk Rock HR and Jason Seiden – who’s new book Super Staying Power launched this week) and Episode 18 at HRevolution in Louisville, Kentucky this past weekend.

Next up – Episode 19, where the Fistful of Talent crew will tackle Next Gen HR – sharing our thoughts and opinions on the future of Talent and HR in general. As someone who has plenty of opinions, I’ll definitely be calling in – and we’ll see if I catch any grief for being lame and not posting often enough over at FOT. (I solemnly vow to improve – I promise!)

If you’re available Thursday night, you should definitely call in or listen to the show live (or the archive at a later date/time) via the BlogTalk Radio channel. You can also lurk or participate in the smack talk on Twitter via the hash tag #HRHappyHour – (follow that here.) Another way to participate if you’re truly snarky (and have been deemed cool enough by the Google gods to receive an invite) is the irreverent HR Happy Hour back channel discussion that goes on over at Google Wave. On the Wave and want to jump in? Leave a comment with your Wave address and I’ll add you to the discussion.

With all of this talking, tweeting and waving going on, clearly, you’ll want to be a part of HR Happy Hour Thursday night. See you there/here!

Well Hello 2009 – I Think I’m Going to Like it Here

Thinking Like many of you, I’m in the midst of a “vacation” from work due to the long New Year’s holiday weekend. I use the word vacation loosely, because (also like many of you) I’m using this time to think about what occurred in 2008 and to prepare for success in 2009.

Looking back into 2008, blogging (starting with Fistful of Talent in March 2008 and the debut of CincyRecruiter’s World in October 2008) was a significant contributor to my professional growth last year, and I look forward to how it will help shape 2009. I have connected with some fantastic people (too many to mention here without missing someone) and have received great advice, help, resources and mentoring from them that has helped me personally and with my clients. Trust me, it’s possible to have both in-person and “virtual relationships” that are meaningful and powerful.

Looking forward into 2009, I’m not one to make New Year’s resolutions, but I can sum up my plans in two words – Awesomeness and Growth. Those two words can be applied to just about everything I want to accomplish personally and professionally. Stay tuned to share in my antics over the coming year…

And finally, while I’ve been visiting with family and friends and pondering both the past and future, I’ve shown up at least a couple of places on the Intertubes. If you didn’t catch them, check out The Jennifer McClure Blog Story on JPIE, and my recent post on Fistful of Talent – 5 Must-Use Social Media Tools for HR & Recruiting Professionals in 2009.

Thanks to you for being a part of my Journey thus far, and I look forward to connecting with you (more frequently) in 2009!

7 Things About Me You Never Knew You Needed To Know

Tagged_1Following a 3 week absence, you may have thought that I had gained so much wealth and fame from my brief blogging career that I retired with my blogging riches never to be seen again…

Ummm – unfortunately – no.

My absence can be partially explained by my recent return from an awesome experience volunteering in South Africa for almost 2 weeks, and following the Thanksgiving holiday, I’ll crank the blogging wheel up and get back to regular posting. So hang in there with me!

While I was unplugged (yep – no cell phone or laptop for 9 days), it seems that many of my fellow bloggers engaged in a bit of “blog tag”, and the lovely and talented Jessica Lee tagged me to share 7 random facts about myself.

Actually, the tag creates a great opportunity to make you aware of Jessica’s cool new blog! She’s a fellow Fistful of Talent contributor and an HR pro with a global PR firm in Washington, DC. who is challenging many of the current norms of the human resources profession. So check out jessica lee writes!

Here’s a couple of the rules of the game:

  1. Link to your original tagger, and list these rules on your blog.
  2. Share 7 facts about yourself in the post – some random, some weird.

So here they are – in no particular order:

  1. I was voted as the Wittiest person in my class in junior high. When senior class superlatives came around, I came in second place. Guess I became less funny as I got older.
  2. I’m deathly afraid of heights, but once did a back flip jumping out of a perfectly good airplane (because I couldn’t bear to look down). The whole experience resulted in an adrenaline rush that left me unable to speak for several minutes after landing.
  3. I worked my tail off in college to accomplish a personal goal of never making less than a “B” – thinking a high GPA would help me land a great job. To this day, no potential employer has ever asked me what my GPA was. (For those playing the home game – a mix of work experience and good grades would have been better.)
  4. I was paddled every year in school from 3rd grade through 10th grade – most often for talking, goofing off, and once (in high school) for climbing out the window while the teacher was out of the room to play frisbee. I was never given detention (we liked our corporal punishment in Tennessee), and my parents still don’t know. Shh…
  5. A few years ago, I back-packed solo through Europe for a couple of weeks with no planned itinerary and an unlimited Eurail Pass. The. Most. Awesome. Experience. Of. My. Life. Evah.
  6. The first time in my career an employee came to me with a sexual harassment claim – I was in labor. Because I was otherwise engaged, I said something sarcastic, she ran out of my office and I couldn’t get up to follow. I called work from the recovery room post-delivery to begin an investigation. (Young and eager I was back then.)
  7. I’m a video game addict who is currently in recovery. I am not allowed to go near, touch or be within spitting distance of an X-Box, Play-Station, Nintendo, etc. because once I start – I cannot stop. Although a Wii keeps calling to me…

So there you go! I’m now supposed to tag seven additional bloggers, but I think most have already participated in the couple of weeks I’ve been gone, so I’ll tag my readers instead. Since I’ve shared just how strange and wonderful I really am with you, hit me in the comments with a random fact about you so I don’t feel all alone!

Stay tuned for more recruiting, coaching, talent management, etc. stuff next week…

Beginning My Journey

Wctboardwalkfootprints_5 “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” – Lao Tzu

No matter what you do, you have to start somewhere. So I’m finally starting something new – my own Blog! I’ve been talking about doing it for months, and after getting bogged down while pondering domain names, blog titles/sub-titles, “about me” pages, etc. for too long now, it’s time to just jump in and get started! So here goes…

Through this process, I’m looking forward to learning more about myself and about the areas I’m interested in – and as a person who’s passion is “connecting”, I want to add another tool to my tool box for connecting with current relationships, new relationships and many of the people I admire and respect. On this blog, you can expect to find posts on topics I’m currently interested in or involved with professionally such as Recruiting, Coaching, Connecting, Talent Management, Human Resources, Leadership and Social Media/Social Networking (to name a few). I’ll be writing and sharing information targeted at the types of people that are my clients – businesses and business leaders who are looking to attract, recruit, retain and develop talent.

I hope you’ll learn from and enjoy the content, and that you’ll participate in this “conversation” with me by subscribing via RSS feed or email (see the boxes in the upper right corner of this page), and also by adding your comments to posts from time to time to let me know what you’re thinking, share questions, provide feedback and let me know that you’re out there!

One step taken. Many more ahead!
