Join Me: The Lost Art of Interviewing – FREE Webinar 9 23 2010

As someone who has spent their entire career sourcing, recruiting, interviewing, selecting and hiring candidates, you’d think I would have learned a thing or two about how to interview well.

But it’s one thing to be the interviewer – and another to be the interviewee. Like most people, I’ve had my share of interviews where I left feeling like I had nailed it – and I may have bombed at least once. I blame Canada. Just because.

But for you – there’s hope! I’m honored to be one of the panelists in a FREE webinar on Thursday, September 23, 2010, where we’ll be sharing tips, hints, do’s and don’ts on the “art” of interviewing.

For more information about the webinar and people involved, see below. For more details and to register – go HERE.

Also be sure to check out more of what’s coming in the future from Mark Stelzner, Laurie Ruettimann and Yasha Stelzner through New Media Services, LLC. They are the Voice of HR. They are the Voice of Careers. Basically, they’ve got you covered!

The Lost Art of Interviewing

Thursday, September 23, 2010
Noon EST | 9:00am PST

You’ve used all the tools at your disposal, networked until your hands were sore, revised your resume a hundred times, survived the online application process, passed the personality assessments and FINALLY landed a job interview. But did you save enough energy to make the most of this rare occasion?

Let’s face facts – with competition for jobs at an all-time high, how you perform during your interview can either be your shining moment or result in complete self-destruction. The bad news for many is that interviewing is the weakest link in their career arsenal. The good news for you is that we’ve assembled a terrific panel of experts who can offer pragmatic advice and answer your most common questions, including:

  • How do I best prepare for an interview?
  • What are today’s employers likely to ask?
  • What can I (the applicant) ask during the interview process?
  • What are some of the more common mistakes to avoid?

Moderated by JobAngels Founder Mark Stelzner, our panel will address these items and more, including an opportunity for you to pose your own questions directly to our experts. Please welcome recruiting and HR experts Jennifer McClure, Deirdre Honner and John Nykolaiszyn as they help you rediscover the lost art of interviewing. And if you’re on Twitter, please follow our hashtag #voc10 to participate real-time with your fellow attendees. This is sure to be a popular event so sign up today!

Time For a Cool Change

Image Credit 1.00 FTE - Impressions of Corporate Life

Several years ago, back when I was working “in the trenches” as an HR Manager in an organization experiencing an insane amount of growth, I often partnered with an outside consulting firm to assist us with various recruiting, leadership development and training initiatives.

Once, during a training session led by the firm’s owner – a wise and engaging gentleman with almost 40 years of combined experience in the corporate and consulting worlds – I remember thinking:

“He’s got the best job in the world. Some day, I want to run my own business too.”

And at that moment, an entrepreneur was born. [cue heavenly music]

But I still had so much to learn…

Fast forward several more years (and no, not over 40 for those of you doing mental math) through a career in Human Resources leadership roles, a second career as an Executive Recruiter and Executive Coach and a third as a professional speaker and trainer – it’s finally time to take that step.

Ladies and gentlemen… Please allow me to introduce my new company – Unbridled Talent, LLC!

Want to learn more about Unbridled Talent?

Below is a short interview (click here if you can’t see the video) I did recently after speaking at the Louisville, KY SHRM Chapter’s monthly luncheon and also leading an afternoon workshop on Using Social Media in HR & Recruiting. In the video, I share a little about my background, a smidge about Unbridled Talent and a bit of my theory on why HR and Recruiting pros need to use social media – all in under 3 minutes!

I’m excited to be able to create a role and a business where I can combine my experiences in Human Resources, Recruiting, Coaching, Leadership, Speaking and Training into one title – President of Unbridled Talent, LLC. It’s the right time for me personally and I also believe it’s a perfect time to work with companies and business leaders to develop and execute Innovative People Strategies!

So here’s a few updates and changes I’d like to share with you:

  • This blog has moved! With the help and patience of the fab Lance Haun, I’ve made the change from TypePad to WordPress, and the name of the blog and site address have also changed to Unbridled Talent and https://jennifermcclure.net/blog. If you’re a subscriber via email or RSS (and if you’re not, I’d love for you to subscribe for automatic updates here or here), then nothing should have changed for you. The feeds still deliver – and during the changeover delivered multiple times. (oops.)
  • There’s a new website and logo – and new business cards that arrived this week! The website is up and running, but will be evolving. I’m a big believer in getting the right expertise involved to create amazing things, so Elaine Suess at beyondbeing llc (who also developed the new logo) will be working with me to make sure that the messaging, benefits of working with us and service offerings are crisp and on point.
  • We’re on Facebook! My goal is to provide unique and personal content on Unbridled Talent’s Facebook Page as well as resources related to Attracting, Recruiting, Developing and Engaging Talent. Trust me, it won’t be just a feed of posts from this blog. There will be pictures, videos and “behind the scenes” content that you won’t see elsewhere. I’d love it if you’d “Like” it!
  • We’re on Twitter! You can still find me on Twitter at @cincyrecruiter and I’ll still be as lovable or annoying (you decide) there as ever. My Twitter strategy has always been to share resources, learn, connect with people, connect people to other people and to be myself – so that won’t change. By following @UnbridledTalent, you’ll get even more resources and information – not duplicate posts of stuff you’ll see if you’re following me elsewhere. It’s my goal to be a valuable source of information in the areas of Talent Attraction, Innovative Recruiting & Sourcing Strategies and People Development – not just noise.
  • My LinkedIn Profile has been updated (if we’re not connected – connect with me!) to reflect my new role, new company and my continued partnership with the fine people at Centennial, Inc. Centennial’s clients often use them as a resource and for assistance with Talent Strategy issues and many of my clients and relationships need Executive Search and Career Coaching Services, so we believe a continued partnership is mutually beneficial. I’m very grateful to the team at Centennial for being extremely helpful and supportive of me in taking this step and I’m excited that we’ll be continuing to work together in the future!

Where We Go From Here

I had much to learn back when I first made the decision to start my own business some day — and thankfully, I still do. I thoroughly enjoy being a student learning from others within the industry and then sharing what I’ve learned with my clients and relationships.

I hope that you’ll join me on this next phase of my journey. Because now, the person who has the best job in the world is… ME!

11.12.09 HR Happy Hour Blog Talk Radio Show Featuring the Fistful of Talent Crew

If you haven’t been paying attention lately, there’s a lot of cool people doing some new and innovative things in the HR/Recruiting/Talent Management space and one of those things is a BlogTalk Radio show hosted by Steve Boese and Shauna Moerke (the HR Minion) called HR Happy Hour.

081e2042-cfa8-455c-bdf6-4832ba4b40e9hr_happy_hour Started as an opportunity for HR pros to chat, vent and discuss the burning issues of the day,the HR Happy Hour has turned into a “must attend” event bi-monthly (sort of) on Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. EST. I’ve been a guest previously on Episode 10 – The Job Seeker’s Show and was also fortunate to be in attendance when the show went on the road recently for two live broadcasts – Episode 17 for the Fail Spectacularly party in Chicago (put on by Laurie Ruettimann of Punk Rock HR and Jason Seiden – who’s new book Super Staying Power launched this week) and Episode 18 at HRevolution in Louisville, Kentucky this past weekend.

Next up – Episode 19, where the Fistful of Talent crew will tackle Next Gen HR – sharing our thoughts and opinions on the future of Talent and HR in general. As someone who has plenty of opinions, I’ll definitely be calling in – and we’ll see if I catch any grief for being lame and not posting often enough over at FOT. (I solemnly vow to improve – I promise!)

If you’re available Thursday night, you should definitely call in or listen to the show live (or the archive at a later date/time) via the BlogTalk Radio channel. You can also lurk or participate in the smack talk on Twitter via the hash tag #HRHappyHour – (follow that here.) Another way to participate if you’re truly snarky (and have been deemed cool enough by the Google gods to receive an invite) is the irreverent HR Happy Hour back channel discussion that goes on over at Google Wave. On the Wave and want to jump in? Leave a comment with your Wave address and I’ll add you to the discussion.

With all of this talking, tweeting and waving going on, clearly, you’ll want to be a part of HR Happy Hour Thursday night. See you there/here!

Well Hello 2009 – I Think I’m Going to Like it Here

Thinking Like many of you, I’m in the midst of a “vacation” from work due to the long New Year’s holiday weekend. I use the word vacation loosely, because (also like many of you) I’m using this time to think about what occurred in 2008 and to prepare for success in 2009.

Looking back into 2008, blogging (starting with Fistful of Talent in March 2008 and the debut of CincyRecruiter’s World in October 2008) was a significant contributor to my professional growth last year, and I look forward to how it will help shape 2009. I have connected with some fantastic people (too many to mention here without missing someone) and have received great advice, help, resources and mentoring from them that has helped me personally and with my clients. Trust me, it’s possible to have both in-person and “virtual relationships” that are meaningful and powerful.

Looking forward into 2009, I’m not one to make New Year’s resolutions, but I can sum up my plans in two words – Awesomeness and Growth. Those two words can be applied to just about everything I want to accomplish personally and professionally. Stay tuned to share in my antics over the coming year…

And finally, while I’ve been visiting with family and friends and pondering both the past and future, I’ve shown up at least a couple of places on the Intertubes. If you didn’t catch them, check out The Jennifer McClure Blog Story on JPIE, and my recent post on Fistful of Talent – 5 Must-Use Social Media Tools for HR & Recruiting Professionals in 2009.

Thanks to you for being a part of my Journey thus far, and I look forward to connecting with you (more frequently) in 2009!

7 Things About Me You Never Knew You Needed To Know

Tagged_1Following a 3 week absence, you may have thought that I had gained so much wealth and fame from my brief blogging career that I retired with my blogging riches never to be seen again…

Ummm – unfortunately – no.

My absence can be partially explained by my recent return from an awesome experience volunteering in South Africa for almost 2 weeks, and following the Thanksgiving holiday, I’ll crank the blogging wheel up and get back to regular posting. So hang in there with me!

While I was unplugged (yep – no cell phone or laptop for 9 days), it seems that many of my fellow bloggers engaged in a bit of “blog tag”, and the lovely and talented Jessica Lee tagged me to share 7 random facts about myself.

Actually, the tag creates a great opportunity to make you aware of Jessica’s cool new blog! She’s a fellow Fistful of Talent contributor and an HR pro with a global PR firm in Washington, DC. who is challenging many of the current norms of the human resources profession. So check out jessica lee writes!

Here’s a couple of the rules of the game:

  1. Link to your original tagger, and list these rules on your blog.
  2. Share 7 facts about yourself in the post – some random, some weird.

So here they are – in no particular order:

  1. I was voted as the Wittiest person in my class in junior high. When senior class superlatives came around, I came in second place. Guess I became less funny as I got older.
  2. I’m deathly afraid of heights, but once did a back flip jumping out of a perfectly good airplane (because I couldn’t bear to look down). The whole experience resulted in an adrenaline rush that left me unable to speak for several minutes after landing.
  3. I worked my tail off in college to accomplish a personal goal of never making less than a “B” – thinking a high GPA would help me land a great job. To this day, no potential employer has ever asked me what my GPA was. (For those playing the home game – a mix of work experience and good grades would have been better.)
  4. I was paddled every year in school from 3rd grade through 10th grade – most often for talking, goofing off, and once (in high school) for climbing out the window while the teacher was out of the room to play frisbee. I was never given detention (we liked our corporal punishment in Tennessee), and my parents still don’t know. Shh…
  5. A few years ago, I back-packed solo through Europe for a couple of weeks with no planned itinerary and an unlimited Eurail Pass. The. Most. Awesome. Experience. Of. My. Life. Evah.
  6. The first time in my career an employee came to me with a sexual harassment claim – I was in labor. Because I was otherwise engaged, I said something sarcastic, she ran out of my office and I couldn’t get up to follow. I called work from the recovery room post-delivery to begin an investigation. (Young and eager I was back then.)
  7. I’m a video game addict who is currently in recovery. I am not allowed to go near, touch or be within spitting distance of an X-Box, Play-Station, Nintendo, etc. because once I start – I cannot stop. Although a Wii keeps calling to me…

So there you go! I’m now supposed to tag seven additional bloggers, but I think most have already participated in the couple of weeks I’ve been gone, so I’ll tag my readers instead. Since I’ve shared just how strange and wonderful I really am with you, hit me in the comments with a random fact about you so I don’t feel all alone!

Stay tuned for more recruiting, coaching, talent management, etc. stuff next week…
