Recommended Blogs for HR & Recruiting Professionals

We’ve come a long way baby…

As usual, former Punk Rock HR blogger (and now HR and careers mogul) Laurie Ruettimann sums it up pretty well. Along with the Evil HR Lady, Kris Dunn and Lance Haun, Laurie was one of the first to open up online to share her experiences about what it’s like to exist in the world of HR.

Now, there are more HR and Recruiting blogs than you can shake a stick at. Some are all kinds of awesome, while others are still finding their way and seeking an audience that includes more than their Mom – and likely me.

I subscribe to a ton of blogs and newsfeeds by using Google Reader and although I read many HR & Recruiting-related blogs, I think it’s important to read blogs and news outside of the space as well. For example, I enjoy reading blogs that are focused on Marketing, PR, Social Media, Leadership, Employment Branding and Professional Speaking to help me be a more rounded business owner and professional and also to stay on top of best practices and case studies that could be useful in helping my clients.

In summary, A&E called, and they want me to appear on their new show – Hoarders: Buried Alive Under RSS Feeds…

But like a junkie who needs another fix, I’m always looking for new blogs to discover, new Bloggers to connect with and new ways of thinking, so I’d like to get your input on blogs that you would recommend that I check out in these categories:

Don’t Call It a Comeback…

LailaAli_01 “Don’t call it a comeback / I’ve been here for years”

Sorta.

Many of you probably recognize the first line as coming from rapper LL Cool J’s 1991 hit song Mama Said Knock You Out.

Those of you that are readers of this blog may also recognize the second line as coming from – well, me.

You know. The Random Blogger.

Oh, I’ve got reasons. Lots of reasons. All of which are poor. I overthink potential blog posts: “it’s too personal”, “it’s off-topic”, “it’s been too long since the news broke”, “Kris Dunn / Laurie Ruettimann / Lance Haun beat me too it” – or, my personal favorite – “I haven’t posted in a while, so I need to write something really good first, before I post something like this”.

Whatever. Bad blogger.

The reality is, blogging is one of the best things I’ve ever done in terms of building some great relationships, learning, my professional growth and developing business opportunities. So every day missed is a missed opportunity. Seriously.

And I don’t want to miss anymore opportunities.

So I’m going to post more often. Not just for the sake of posting, but I’ll be scheduling time for writing as part of my job and not treating it like a hobby. Sometimes posts may be short and to the point (the ultimate goal). Sometimes I’ll share something I found elsewhere that I’d like to pass along that you may or may not have seen. I’ll also continue to write about my experiences – both what I’ve learned and what I’m learning – and I’ll share my opinions on stuff that’s going on in the worlds of recruiting, HR, leadership development, career management and social media.

2010’s going to be an interesting year for me – and also for many of you! Some
new focus and re-branding is in order here in my world (too bad RandomBlogger.com and BadBlogger.com are already taken) and you’ll want to stick around for that journey.

Please know that I really appreciate each and every opportunity to connect with you here. Make sure you’re a subscriber – either via RSS or by email – and contribute to the conversation by commenting on posts that spark a thought or reaction. I don’t have all the answers and sometimes (gasp), I’m even wrong. I just can’t recall the last time either of those two things happened…

I’ll take the liberty of borrowing just a little bit more from LLCJ. Here’s what’s ahead in 2010:

“I’m gonna take this itty bitty world by storm / And I’m just gettin’ warm…”

Who Is The Best Recruiter In The World? (And Other Stuff People Ask Me)

Keyword Graph One of the fun things about having a place on the internet where I share my thoughts with the universe is periodically checking the Analytics for this blog. Being a Charts, Graphs and Data Girl, this information definitely interests me and it’s very helpful as I continue to search for my blogging “voice” by seeing what content attracts and engages readers. (And bonus points for the data being frequently amusing too!)

Here’s a sampling from a recent look at some of the data for Cincy Recruiter’s World:

  • Over 18,000 unique visitors have come to this site since it began in October 2008
  • Almost 30,000 pages have been viewed
  • Visitors reside in 121 countries (85 countries sent more than 1 visitor)

Top 6 referring sites:

  1. Smartbrief.com
  2. LinkedIn
  3. Twitter
  4. Punk Rock HR
  5. Fistful of Talent
  6. Facebook

Most popular posts: (List posts seem to be very popular)

    1. 6 Tips for Developing Executive Presence
    2. 25 Web Resources to Help You Get Your LinkedIn Game On
    3. 10 Social Media Resources for Executive Job Search
    4. 10 People All Recruiters Should Follow on Twitter
    5. Searching for a Job? Don’t Call a Recruiter – Think Like a Recruiter
    6. What Are The Best Interview Questions to Identify Leadership Potential?

People pondering these questions via search engines also ended up here:

    • “How long is a resamay?” Not sure about a resamay – but I’d suggest 2 pages for a Resume.
    • “How am I going to look when I’m 30?” I don’t know about you kid, but I looked fabulous. 😉
    • “What to do when a Recruiter calls?” Hmmm… I’m thinking you should answer the phone and say hello?
    • “How do you get a Recruiter to pay attention to you?” Be a legitimate match for a position we’re actively recruiting for. Oh, and be likeable. Recruiters are people too and that works with just about anyone.
    • “Who is the best Recruiter in the world?” Wow. I never cease to be amazed by the power of Google to help you find the exact answer your looking for.
    • “What are HR professionals saying to each other?” I think they’re talking about how much they like Recruiters… and how they want to learn how to effectively use Social Media in HR.
    • “Who are some famous business leaders that use charts and graphs and diagrams?” As mentioned above, I do love me some CG & D, but Texas billionaire/former Presidential candidate Ross Perot perfected the art. Note to self: Must get one of those voodoo sticks…
    • “What is a Coaching hat?” I don’t know. But I think I want one.
    • “I hate people and try to avoid interactions with them.” Dude…I don’t know if you’ll find much of what you’re looking for here in Cincy Recruiter’s World, but maybe you will on this blog.
    • “nofaultparadise” Not sure where this is, but to quote my fav Liz Lemon – “I want to go to there.”

And finally, the gift that keeps on giving… at least 11 visitors who Googled phrases like “paddled + 3rd grade “, “paddled in high school” and the creepy “jenn + got + paddled + detention” ended up here thanks to this post. I can only hope that when they got here, they picked up a few helpful tips and strategies for recruiting, coaching, social media and talent development.

Thanks to everyone that has participated in this journey thus far! If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll continue down the path with me and subscribe via email or RSS. I also hope you’ll add to the conversation on my posts by sharing your Comments. I really do want to hear from you!

Unless you hate people and want to avoid interactions with them. Then you can pass…

10 Social Media Resources for Executive Job Search

Web2_logos I recently spoke at the Greater Cincinnati ExecuNet networking meeting for senior level professionals in career transition on the topic of 10 Social Media Resources for Executive Job Search. The group included a mix of executives – some familiar with many of the resources, some familiar with a few, and some who were learning about them for the first time. My goal was to provide a wide range of tools for the attendees to investigate, with the hope that each person walked away with at least three or four that they wanted to increase their involvement with or to implement.

My top 10 – in order of recommendation – are as follows:

    1. LinkedIn (duh)
    2. VisualCV
    3. JibberJobber
    4. Personal Website (buy yourname.com)
    5. Blogging
    6. Facebook
    7. Ning Groups
    8. Twitter
    9. Research/Automate/Consolidate (use RSS / read Blogs / set up Google Alerts)
    10. Job Search Engines/Aggregators (Indeed.com & SimplyHired.com)

I’d be interested in your thoughts and feedback as to additional tools you would recommend that were not included, or comments on my rankings. The comments are yours dear readers. Power to the people, Yo…

Keep The Dream Alive for CincyRecruiter’s World!

2008Dunk O.k. CincyRecruiter raving fans (or mild enthusiasts), in the spirit of March Madness, the gang at Fistful of Talent and The HR Capitalist Kris Dunn are once again choosing the top Talent Management blogs – but this time instead of the FOT contributors being the judges – it’s time for your vote to be counted! So, since I’m not one of the judges as usual, CincyRecruiter’s World has been added to the mix. What that means is that I NEED YOU to take a couple of minutes to check out the poll, and if you’d like to see CincyRecruiter’s World advance, cast your vote in Game #11 (for CincyRecruiter).

Unfortunately, I’m up against Steve Roesler of All Things Workplace, which is a great blog that I love. However, my top strength in the results of my Strengths Finder 2.0 assessment is Competition – so in an effort to remain true to form – Steve must go down! (but I love ya man) Seriously, I’d suggest you check out the contenders in the HR Carnival/FOT March Madness Rankings and add each blog to your email subscriptions or RSS Reader because they’re all great.

But it sure would be nice to advance to the Sweet 16… Voting in Round 1 ends Thursday, March 5th – so don’t delay!
