How to Identify Your Career Drivers and Take Action

Last year, I attended a conference called BridgeCon, which is produced by the team at Instructure. The conference was held in beautiful Park City, Utah, and it was a great opportunity for me to learn more about their Bridge Career product — an employee-centric career development tool that aligns career vision with core values and skills to increase fulfillment and clarity and drive personal and business growth.

At the conference, I had the opportunity to meet Steve Arntz – Product Director at Instructure, and he led me through a process to determine my “career drivers”, using Bridge’s Career Drivers deck – a deck of cards designed for leaders to use with team members to facilitate insightful career discussions, and to create action steps to help them grow in meaningful ways.

I found the whole Career Drivers discussion to be fascinating, and using the card deck to facilitate the discussion was really helpful in guiding our conversation, as well as pulling out some insights that I wasn’t aware of. So, I invited Steve to join me on this episode of the Impact Makers podcast to share more about the process he and the team at Instructure went through to develop the Career Drivers exercise, as well as how it’s helped him personally in his interesting career journey thus far.

If you’re a leader in your organization, I think you’ll find this conversation helpful to you as you think about what motivates you personally in your career, but also how you can help your team members to identify their own career drivers in order to create more impact at work and in life.

Show Highlights:

  • The origins of Steve’s passion for career development and helping people to find their “Why”.
  • How Steve strives to help people connect with each other one-to-one, and his passion for working at the intersection of human connection and personal growth and development.
  • The creation of the Bridge Career Drivers card deck, and learning that that people care more about key motivations and drivers than they do about roles in their career journey.
  • The importance of taking the time to have conversations with your team members about their career goals, and the only mistake you can make in that process.

How HR, Recruiters And Job Seekers Can Prepare For The Future Of Work

Recently, I had the opportunity to be a guest on the Copeland Coaching Podcast, which is hosted by Angela Copeland – Career Coach and the CEO of Copeland Coaching.

Angela had some great questions related to typical challenges faced by job seekers, such as how to prepare for an interview, how to work with HR in the process, and how to ask for – and get – constructive feedback.

We also talked about the importance of managing your career like an entrepreneur, and why we must all become life-long learners – because the world of work is changing so rapidly that we’ll be left behind if we don’t.

5 Ways To Accelerate Your Career And Advance To The Executive Ranks

Back in the day, when I was a college junior being pressed to choose a major, I didn’t have a clue about what type of job I wanted to do for the rest of my life. (Times were different back then kids. We thought we had to work at the same place until we died.)

After very little research, I pronounced to my friends, family and university advisor that I wanted to work in Human Resources.

Why? Because I thought that working in HR would provide me with an opportunity to work with all employees in the company, and I could be the boss of as many people as possible. See? I was a Millennial before being a Millennial was cool!

Exploring Career Opportunities Without Jeopardizing Your Current Job #AskJennifer

Are you happily (or contently) employed, but at the same time wonder if there are better career opportunities out there?

(Email subscribers click here to view the video)

If that’s the case, you may wonder how you can position yourself for career growth – either inside or outside your current company – without making your employer nervous – or even worse – risking being blackballed or fired because they consider you a flight risk.

I’m diving into this topic on this week’s edition of Ask Jennifer – a new video series where I’ll be answering your questions – in five minutes or less.

Except this week’s episode is slightly longer. Oops.

Let’s chalk it up to inaugural excitement about the new format. 🙂

In Episode 1 of Ask Jennifer, I’ll answer the following question for “Valerie”, a woman who recently attended a workshop I led on “Defining and Communicating Your Personal Brand for Career Growth”.

Valerie has been with her current company for almost 20 years. She’s not unhappy. But she would like to explore career opportunities to understand how marketable her skills are – and if the grass really is greener somewhere else. But she also doesn’t want to send any red flags to her current employer that she may be looking. (Smart!)

Want to know what advice I have for Valerie?

Take a few moments to watch the quick video to learn more about the 3 steps I recommend to Valerie (and others) who want to get noticed for opportunities without causing any drama.

  1. Update/fully complete your LinkedIn Profile.
  2. Talk to/offer to help Recruiters that reach out to you.
  3. Attend and get involved with your local professional networking association.

Have a question related to growing your career, your leadership or your skills as a speaker or presenter?

Send it my way!

I’d love to hear from you, and maybe your question will be featured in an upcoming episode of Ask Jennifer!
