Invest in Your Career – Sign Up for The Career Summit!

Five years ago next month, I was fired from my job.

It wasn’t a surprise. I knew my day was coming. In fact, I’d been suggesting the demise of my position for quite awhile. I’d even been encouraged by my CEO to look for a job while still on the payroll – since it was only a matter of time before the axe would fall after the sale of the company where I worked.

But I didn’t do anything to find a new job.

In some sort of Gen X loyalty play gone awry – I told myself it would be wrong to look for a job while still having a job.

Dummy -> Me.

Go ahead. Judge me. (You know you want to).

Now stop judging me. (It’s not nice.)

The truth is, I had quite a few reasons excuses that were causing my career paralysis, including:

  • I’d been “too busy” focusing on what needed to be done in my day job and had developed very few professional relationships outside of my current company.
  • As an Introvert, I found the very thought of “networking” to be exhausting.
  • Job boards, applicant tracking systems – and even email (gasp!) – were all new pieces in the job search puzzle since I’d last looked for a job.
  • I was burned out and not sure what I wanted to do next. (A start up, three high growth environments and one successful turnaround & subsequent company sale can do that to a person.)

So I stuck my head in the sand and I did nothing.

Until the day I was invited to leave.

Once I was forced to confront the process, I reached out to some really smart and wonderful people – including one awesome Career Coach – who shared their expertise, thoughts and advice with me. And with their help I was able to learn how to follow a process for building relationships (i.e. networking) that helped me to identify and connect with the “right” people and even find the courage to try something new in my career – which involved a change that wasn’t even close to being on my radar. Ever.

In other words – it took a Village (of Experts) to help me get my career back on track and headed in the right direction. And I’m grateful for the career wake-up call that getting fired gave me. It’s one of the best things that has ever happened to me. For real.

Maybe you’re stuck in your own version of an Ostrich Moment. If so, then check out The Career Summit – starting online October 26th and running weekly through November 17th. There, you can access your own Village (of Experts) who can help if you are:

  • unsure about how to develop an effective online presence and navigating “job search 2.0”.
  • confused about how to deal with HR and Recruiters (who isn’t?).
  • currently employed and looking to figure out your next career step on the down low.
  • dissatisfied in your current job, but unsure what you want to do next.
  • currently employed and find it difficult to attend seminars or webinars that are held during work hours.

This really is a great opportunity and I’m excited that my friends Laurie Ruettimann and Mark Stelzner have pulled together a stellar cast of characters to help you in your career journey.

I encourage you to register and join us online for the weekly live presentations, or access the recordings as often as you like via the archives. By signing up, you’ll also have access to several free career resources, books and articles.

You can even be proactive about managing your career by eating Cheetos while listening in your pajamas if you want. And you don’t have to get fired to start the process.

How cool is that?

*p.s. – Don’t miss my Session on November 10th at 3pm ET – “Great Brands, Great HR: Demystify the Recruiting Process” – where I’ll be interviewing Richard Cho – Recruiting Lead at Facebook, Jeremy Langhans – Senior Recruiter | Talent Engagement at Starbucks and Heather McGough – HR & Recruiting Professional at Microsoft.  We’re going to break down what happens in the hiring process and how job seekers can get noticed by recruiters, HR pros and hiring managers. It’s going to be awesome! 🙂

Recommended Blogs for HR & Recruiting Professionals

We’ve come a long way baby…

As usual, former Punk Rock HR blogger (and now HR and careers mogul) Laurie Ruettimann sums it up pretty well. Along with the Evil HR Lady, Kris Dunn and Lance Haun, Laurie was one of the first to open up online to share her experiences about what it’s like to exist in the world of HR.

Now, there are more HR and Recruiting blogs than you can shake a stick at. Some are all kinds of awesome, while others are still finding their way and seeking an audience that includes more than their Mom – and likely me.

I subscribe to a ton of blogs and newsfeeds by using Google Reader and although I read many HR & Recruiting-related blogs, I think it’s important to read blogs and news outside of the space as well. For example, I enjoy reading blogs that are focused on Marketing, PR, Social Media, Leadership, Employment Branding and Professional Speaking to help me be a more rounded business owner and professional and also to stay on top of best practices and case studies that could be useful in helping my clients.

In summary, A&E called, and they want me to appear on their new show – Hoarders: Buried Alive Under RSS Feeds…

But like a junkie who needs another fix, I’m always looking for new blogs to discover, new Bloggers to connect with and new ways of thinking, so I’d like to get your input on blogs that you would recommend that I check out in these categories:

Must Read HR Blog/Possibly Undiscovered HR Blog

Jennifer’s Picks -> The HR Capitalist and Women of  HR (multi-contributor)

Must Read Recruiting Blog/Possibly Undiscovered Recruiting Blog

Jennifer’s Picks -> ERE.net (multi-contributor) and Sirona Says

Must Read Leadership Blog/Possibly Undiscovered Leadership Blog

Jennifer’s Picks -> Great Leadership and Just Dewett – Fuel For Leaders

Wildcard: Must Read Blog – Other/Possibly Undiscovered Blog – Other

RecruitFest October 7, 2010: Learn From the Best for FREE

Yeah, I know. I attend a lot of conferences in the recruiting and HR space.

It wasn’t too long ago that I was someone who had never attended even a local conference before.

I was too busy to be out of the office. I didn’t have the money (or spent the money) in my budget. In an effort to be a good Boss, I made sure that the people who worked on my team got out for professional development opportunities – but I never made it to any.

I put myself and my professional development last. Boo.

Two years ago, I made a conscious decision to invest in myself by attending two of the leading HR and Recruiting conferences – the SHRM Annual Conference and ERE Fall Expo. I use the word “invest” on purpose, because at that time, I was a 3rd party recruiter paid only on commission, so any expenses related to attending came out of my own pocket (i.e. not paid for by my company) – and time out of the office took me away from revenue generating activities for a few days.

Yet I can safely say that getting out to some of these events to learn from many of the big brains in Recruiting, HR and Talent Management, as well as to build relationships with key people in my industry has been one of the best decisions of my career.

I’ve had the opportunity to learn from (and meet) some of the top Thought Leaders in my profession and I’ve listened to case studies and best practices shared by practitioners at leading organizations. I’ve also developed some of the strongest and most helpful business and personal relationships that I’ve ever had in my career.

To put all of that into business-speak – an extremely positive ROI has been achieved.

*

As I continue to grow in my career and develop my new business, I’m continuously curious and love to learn – so conferences are one way for me to meet those needs. But sometimes the cost, travel and/or time investment can make attending a no-go.

So I’m really excited that the folks at RecruitingBlogs.com and Monster.com are making the entire October 7th RecruitFest conference in Boston available to view FREE and Live online!

  • Big Brains/Thought Leaders/Practitioners from Leading Organizations? Check.
  • Opportunity to view and participate LIVE in the conference from the comfort of your office or while viewing at home in your pajamas? Check.
  • Easy to sign up and – did I mention – FREE? Check.

I’d recommend clearing your schedule from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST on Thursday, October 7th to be there.

You’re Boss will love you because you’re saving T&E dollars + you’ll get smarter = WIN.

Will I “see” you there?

Help Me With My Homework: What Are The Top Issues for Human Resources Today?

I’ve been a long-term member of my local SHRM Chapter – the Greater Cincinnati Human Resources Association – and have served on both the Staffing & Recruiting and Communications Committees in an effort learn from others, meet people and to give back to my community. If you’re not involved with your local chapter, I highly recommend it!

Recently, I also volunteered to be a part of the Strategic Planning Team for GCHRA and we’re going to spend the next several weeks developing a Plan to recommend to the Board that will provide focus to the organization in an effort to best serve its membership for the next 3 years. I’m excited about being involved and look forward to working with some super smart people in the process.

That’s where you come in! My first assignment is to come back to the Team with a list of current priorities and focus areas for Human Resources and Human Capital professionals to ensure that our committee is addressing what is important to the GCHRA membership.

As a start, I’ve pulled some data from a recent Human Resources Executive Online survey on “What’s Keeping HR Leaders Awake?”. With 1,032 responses, I think the survey results provide a good start – with the 3 biggest challenges for HR identified to be:

  1. Engagement
  2. Leadership Development
  3. Retention

But I want to know what YOU think!

  • What’s keeping you awake at night as an HR/Recruiting/Talent Management professional?
  • What are you spending the majority of your time on these days?
  • Do what’s keeping you awake and where you spend your time align?
  • Are you still looking for the roadmap to find your seat at the table? (I kid. I kid.)

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments section. I have homework due this week and I want to impress the Teacher! 🙂

Join Me: The Lost Art of Interviewing – FREE Webinar 9 23 2010

As someone who has spent their entire career sourcing, recruiting, interviewing, selecting and hiring candidates, you’d think I would have learned a thing or two about how to interview well.

But it’s one thing to be the interviewer – and another to be the interviewee. Like most people, I’ve had my share of interviews where I left feeling like I had nailed it – and I may have bombed at least once. I blame Canada. Just because.

But for you – there’s hope! I’m honored to be one of the panelists in a FREE webinar on Thursday, September 23, 2010, where we’ll be sharing tips, hints, do’s and don’ts on the “art” of interviewing.

For more information about the webinar and people involved, see below. For more details and to register – go HERE.

Also be sure to check out more of what’s coming in the future from Mark Stelzner, Laurie Ruettimann and Yasha Stelzner through New Media Services, LLC. They are the Voice of HR. They are the Voice of Careers. Basically, they’ve got you covered!

The Lost Art of Interviewing

Thursday, September 23, 2010
Noon EST | 9:00am PST

You’ve used all the tools at your disposal, networked until your hands were sore, revised your resume a hundred times, survived the online application process, passed the personality assessments and FINALLY landed a job interview. But did you save enough energy to make the most of this rare occasion?

Let’s face facts – with competition for jobs at an all-time high, how you perform during your interview can either be your shining moment or result in complete self-destruction. The bad news for many is that interviewing is the weakest link in their career arsenal. The good news for you is that we’ve assembled a terrific panel of experts who can offer pragmatic advice and answer your most common questions, including:

  • How do I best prepare for an interview?
  • What are today’s employers likely to ask?
  • What can I (the applicant) ask during the interview process?
  • What are some of the more common mistakes to avoid?

Moderated by JobAngels Founder Mark Stelzner, our panel will address these items and more, including an opportunity for you to pose your own questions directly to our experts. Please welcome recruiting and HR experts Jennifer McClure, Deirdre Honner and John Nykolaiszyn as they help you rediscover the lost art of interviewing. And if you’re on Twitter, please follow our hashtag #voc10 to participate real-time with your fellow attendees. This is sure to be a popular event so sign up today!
