5 Things I Plan to Start, Stop, and Continue Doing in 2023

Impact Makers Podcast Episode 072

Start? Stop? Continue?

When I was in human resources, as part of review processes, I learned to look at things to start, stop, and continue rather than just talking about traditional goal setting.

With 2023 right around the corner, I thought I’d share five things I plan to start doing, five things I plan to stop doing, and five things I plan to continue doing next year.

Hopefully, this will encourage you to do the same as part of your goal-setting process as well.

Start

  1. Goal setting and tracking
  2. Daily planning/time blocking/using Trello
  3. Prioritizing learning/professional development
  4. Investing in my relationships
  5. Scheduling time for content creation

Stop

  1. Starting my morning with my phone
  2. Allowing busy work to fill my day vs activities focused on achieving my goals
  3. Not prioritizing my email list community
  4. Putting off writing a book
  5. Taking my friends and family for granted

Continue

  1. Using Profit First in both of my businesses
  2. Participating on the Defense Business Board
  3. Listening to podcasts for professional development
  4. Outsourcing what I’m not best at/working with a team
  5. Podcasting ?

10 Questions You Should Be Asking to Prevent Your Best Employees from Leaving

Impact Makers Podcast Episode 071

In general, employees leave their jobs because they want more career growth, flexibility, and/or appreciation and recognition.

You’ve probably also heard that people leave managers, not companies.

So, how do you prevent your best employees from leaving?

By taking the time to have conversations with your direct reports and team members to understand what’s working, what’s not working, and how you can help to set them up for success.

Whether you’re doing performance evaluations, having end of year discussions, or talking about goal setting and goal planning for next year, I’m sharing 10 questions you should ask.

To Discover Skills to Focus on or Develop / Areas to Eliminate or Support

1. What are 3 aspects of your job that you feel you’re best at, or enjoy the most?

2. What are 2 areas in your job where you could use more support or resources, or would prefer not to do?

3. Outside of work, what do you really enjoy doing? Do you have a hobby, or a passion project that you work on that gives you joy?

Learning and Development / Career Growth

4. Is there something that you would like to have an opportunity to learn or explore, that either isn’t a part of your current job, or is something you’d like to try?

5. Are there skills that you would like to learn, or career opportunities that you would like to explore that you don’t fee are available to you in your current role, or at this company?

Flexibility / Work Hours

6. Does the current schedule or work situation allow you to do your best work, while also enjoying your life away from work?

Understand How Someone Likes to Be Managed

7. How do you like to be recognized and appreciated? What is meaningful to you?

8. How often would you prefer to meet to discuss and share progress against your goals?

Support Their Progress and Ensure Success

9. What is one thing that I can do to set you up for success in 2023, that I’m not doing currently?

The Magic Question

10.If I gave you a magic wand, and you could change one thing about your current job, or about the company – what would you change?

Prioritizing Self-Care to Ensure Your Best Performance and Highest Impact

Impact Makers Podcast Episode 068

Self-care isn’t selfish. It is necessary.

We truly can’t pour from an empty cup and we can’t help others if we’re emotionally worn, completely stressed out, or too sick to help.

As my travel calendar eases up and the end of the year approaches, I settle into closing out current year projects, and planning for success in the new year.

I also tend to think more about my health during this time of the year, as I’m typically a bit exhausted – in a good way, but still tired – from being on the road several days each month.

So, because I’m starting my time of reflection and preparation, and also because there are quite a few new listeners to the Impact Makers podcast, I thought I’d share an episode from the archives on the importance of self-care (originally shared as episode 32: “Why Self-Care Isn’t Selfish – and How to Make It a Strategic Priority”).

This episode contains a lot of great tips and advice on how to take time out to focus on our own well-being and self-care, in order to avoid health issues or burnout as a result of what we’ve all been through over the last couple of years.

I’m talking about self-care and the five areas I’ve been trying to improve for the sake of myself, my family, and my business.

My goal is to help you understand the importance of self-care and how to practice it, proactively, without feeling guilty.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • What is self-care? I’ll give you my favorite definition and share a great quote to help you remember why it’s so important.
  • I share the five key areas of self-care and give you tips for each area.
  • Our bodies speak to us, sometimes loud and clear. If we don’t listen, the consequences can be devastating.
  • We’re talking about self-care, but I believe that caring for others is also a form of self-care.
  • Self-care has a physical, mental and emotional impact on our lives, our bodies and on those around us.

IMPACT MAKERS PODCAST – EPISODE 69

Key Quotes From This Episode:

“It’s important to take care of yourself so you can show up every day- and be your best self every day – in order to take care of your company and your family.” ~ @Jennifer McClure

“Self care is a radical act of love that increases your capacity for impact.” ~ @Shelly Tygielski

“If you don’t have a hobby or a trigger that causes you to want to get outdoors, to move to play, it’s never too late. You can play a sport, you can go for a walk, you can start running, even if you walk in the races. What is it that can help you get outdoors?” ~ @Jennifer McClure

Expert Resume Tips to Achieve Success in the Modern Day Job Search with Chris Villanueva

Impact Makers Podcast Episode 068

Looking for a new job? How do you stand out from the crowd and make sure your resume gets noticed?

If you’re planning to use the same resume you created 10 years ago, well, that probably won’t be too useful. Times have changed, and so has resume writing!

There are actually things you need to be intentional with when it comes to showcasing your strengths and making sure you’re getting your message across.

Today, I’m joined by Chris Villanueva, the CEO & Co-Founder of Let’s Eat, Grandma, an online resume service that was ranked by The Balance as the best resume service of 2022.

Chris shares some of his best advice for job seekers and career changers related to creating resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles that will get you noticed, and also help you connect with your dream job.

We also talk about how to overcome some of the challenges that we all face with building new professional relationships in an increasingly hybrid or remote work environment.

Finally, Chris answers the burning question: One page resume or as many as it takes?

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

  • What has changed over the last few years when it comes to resumes.
  • The power of using keywords on your resume and LinkedIn profile to assist you in being found for the job you want.
  • How to address gaps in employment on a resume.
  • How your LinkedIn Profile should differ from your resume.
  • The biggest frustrations job seekers have with recruiters and hiring managers.
  • How we can build relationships in a world where many people are working virtually.
  • Why you should invest in a resume writing service to accelerate positive results in your job search.

IMPACT MAKERS PODCAST – EPISODE 68

Key Quotes From This Episode:

“Your resume is a marketing piece that you have so many eyeballs potentially on, but you have a very short amount of time to make an impact with that one little document.” ~ @Chris Villanueva

“A cover letter…goes beyond the resume in that it can tell an actual story, it can tell your why or even your philosophy of how you work as a professional.” ~ @Chris Villanueva

“I think folks should ask themselves, ‘If I were a recruiter or hiring manager and I was simply typing in some keywords to find the ideal candidate, which ones would I use to target that person’.” ~ @Chris Villanueva
