How to Identify Your Career Drivers and Take Action

Last year, I attended a conference called BridgeCon, which is produced by the team at Instructure. The conference was held in beautiful Park City, Utah, and it was a great opportunity for me to learn more about their Bridge Career product — an employee-centric career development tool that aligns career vision with core values and skills to increase fulfillment and clarity and drive personal and business growth.

At the conference, I had the opportunity to meet Steve Arntz – Product Director at Instructure, and he led me through a process to determine my “career drivers”, using Bridge’s Career Drivers deck – a deck of cards designed for leaders to use with team members to facilitate insightful career discussions, and to create action steps to help them grow in meaningful ways.

I found the whole Career Drivers discussion to be fascinating, and using the card deck to facilitate the discussion was really helpful in guiding our conversation, as well as pulling out some insights that I wasn’t aware of. So, I invited Steve to join me on this episode of the Impact Makers podcast to share more about the process he and the team at Instructure went through to develop the Career Drivers exercise, as well as how it’s helped him personally in his interesting career journey thus far.

If you’re a leader in your organization, I think you’ll find this conversation helpful to you as you think about what motivates you personally in your career, but also how you can help your team members to identify their own career drivers in order to create more impact at work and in life.

Show Highlights:

  • The origins of Steve’s passion for career development and helping people to find their “Why”.
  • How Steve strives to help people connect with each other one-to-one, and his passion for working at the intersection of human connection and personal growth and development.
  • The creation of the Bridge Career Drivers card deck, and learning that that people care more about key motivations and drivers than they do about roles in their career journey.
  • The importance of taking the time to have conversations with your team members about their career goals, and the only mistake you can make in that process.

10 Things You Need to Do to Make This Year Your Best Year Ever

As I’m sure you did too, I spent some time during the end of year holidays to reflect on the past year, the past decade, and my life in general. I also spent a little time – not enough yet – to consider the new year, and the new decade that lies ahead. If I’m blessed to be able to make it through to celebrate 2030, there’s a whole lot that I need and want to do!

As I was traveling to Tennessee to spend the week with my extended family, I spent a lot of time thinking about the new year during my 5 ½-hour drive. To prepare for my annual goal-setting process, I asked myself “What I would need to do to make this the best year ever?”

I came up with 10 things, and wrote them down (without looking!) on the back of an envelope while driving, so I could share them with you. I’m inviting you to join me in making 2020 not only MY best year ever, but YOUR best year ever too!

The Random Show — Conversations with My BFF Laurie Ruettimann

When my BFF, Laurie Ruettimann, called me up and told me about her unplanned, open afternoon and a need for a last-minute podcast guest, I suggested we do a recording together to fill the gap.

Inspired by Tim Ferriss’ recurring random conversations on The Tim Ferriss podcast with his friend Kevin Rose, I suggested we do something similar. The resulting conversation was fun, and also ventured into both Laurie and I sharing some of our highs and lows of 2019, as well as what we’re excited about and focusing on in 2020.

In addition to being my friend, Laurie is also one of my personal mentors and a frequent travel companion. She’s a well-known writer, speaker, and podcaster who helps executives and HR leaders prioritize the employee experience to avoid the collateral damage of a toxic work environment.

Laurie Ruettimann

In this podcast conversation, we chat about where Laurie is in the process of writing and publishing her first traditionally published book, and then we move on to chatting about our outlooks for the new year, my epiphanies about time management and some of our favorite travel stories. We also discuss burnout and rethinking the way that we view our businesses.

Show Highlights:

  • Laurie’s book writing journey, the editing process, and what to expect in the new year and beyond.
  • Goodreads and Amazon as incredibly important platforms for authors and how Laurie’s publishing team is prepping for her book launch later next year.
  • Some of the places and events I’ll be traveling to in 2020.
  • My epiphanies around time management, which I had while recovering from a horse-riding accident.
  • What we’re excited about for 2020, including doing things a little bit differently in our lives in regards to our physical and mental health.

My Favorite Apps and Online Tools

I really enjoy reading blog posts and listening to podcasts from leaders that I follow, where they share some of their favorite tools and resources for productivity, running their businesses – or just cool apps that they use.

When others share what’s working for them,  it’s a great way for me to discover cool new tools that I want to check out, or to learn a different way to use one that I’m already familiar with.

With that in mind, I decided to share fifteen of my favorite apps and online tools with you in an episode of the Impact Makers podcast, including tools that increase my productivity and efficiency, tools to facilitate communication and community, and some of the financial and data storage tools that allow me to run both of my businesses without worrying where everything is located, or what could happen if my computer crashes or is stolen.

Some of the tools and apps I mention in this episode may not be new to you, but maybe I’m using them in a different way than you are. Or maybe you’ve heard of some of them before, but haven’t tried them out yet. Either way, I think you’ll find something new in this list that can make your life better or easier!

IMPACT MAKERS PODCAST – EPISODE 35

Show Highlights:

  • My favorite productivity and efficiency tools, including my preferred calendar for time management and scheduling.
  • Some of my preferred communication and community tools, including Zoom. (Plus why Zoom is a great tool for international calls.)
  • Tools that help me to manage content sharing for multiple social network accounts for both of my businesses, as well as my personal accounts.
  • The importance of protection against computer data loss, plus my favorite backup tool.
  • The financial tools and apps I use for both my personal and business finances, and how they help me organize invoices and business expenses

And because I personally like to save Toolkits like this with links to all of the resources mentioned, so I can reference them when needed, we’ve made a beautiful PDF for you that you can download and save. The PDF lists all of these great resources, what they are, and where you can find them.

How to Start a Movement — The Origin Story of DisruptHR

As the Chief Excitement Officer of DisruptHR, I’m often asked to share how DisruptHR got it’s start. Were we planning to start a movement? Did we have plans for it to grown into what it’s become today? The easy answer to both of those questions is “No.” 🙂

You may already be familiar with DisruptHR. But I’m sure there are some who’ve never heard of it, or they have, but they’re not quite sure what it is, and if it’s something they should get involved with.

So I decided to share the origin story in an episode of the Impact Makers podcast. And whether you’re a huge fan of DisruptHR or not, I think you’ll get some great takeaways!

DisruptHR has grown from an idea shared over lunch, to a global community that has helped thousands of people around the world to get their ideas heard, and to connect with like-minded people.  It was created out of a desire to encourage leaders to take risks, to stir the pot and to “disrupt” in order to succeed.

My hope is that by listening to this episode, you’re encouraged to go out there, find a place where you can start dancing, get somebody else to dance with you, bring on even more people, and create the change you want to see in the world!

“The First Follower transforms a lone nut into a leader. If the leader is the flint, the First Follower is the spark that sets the fire.”

“The Second Follower is a turning point: it’s proof the First has done well. Now, it’s not a lone nut, and it’s not two nuts. Three is a crowd, and a crowd is news.”
