Recommended Blogs for HR & Recruiting Professionals

We’ve come a long way baby…

As usual, former Punk Rock HR blogger (and now HR and careers mogul) Laurie Ruettimann sums it up pretty well. Along with the Evil HR Lady, Kris Dunn and Lance Haun, Laurie was one of the first to open up online to share her experiences about what it’s like to exist in the world of HR.

Now, there are more HR and Recruiting blogs than you can shake a stick at. Some are all kinds of awesome, while others are still finding their way and seeking an audience that includes more than their Mom – and likely me.

I subscribe to a ton of blogs and newsfeeds by using Google Reader and although I read many HR & Recruiting-related blogs, I think it’s important to read blogs and news outside of the space as well. For example, I enjoy reading blogs that are focused on Marketing, PR, Social Media, Leadership, Employment Branding and Professional Speaking to help me be a more rounded business owner and professional and also to stay on top of best practices and case studies that could be useful in helping my clients.

In summary, A&E called, and they want me to appear on their new show – Hoarders: Buried Alive Under RSS Feeds…

But like a junkie who needs another fix, I’m always looking for new blogs to discover, new Bloggers to connect with and new ways of thinking, so I’d like to get your input on blogs that you would recommend that I check out in these categories:

  1. I had not even heard of The Anti-Social Media until I read this post and it is awesome! Good recommendation.

As far as the HR blogs you’ve listed, I would agree with most of them since I read many of those as well. FOT is a great blog since it has a large brain trust of knowledge to dip into. Lance Haun’s Rehaul is a good HR post to check up on as well.

    • I’m glad you like The Anti-Social Media Drew! I think Jay does a great job of being funny, informative and thought provoking. It’s not the same old Twitter is great, Facebook has a billion people, etc.

  2. Jennifer, thank you for the Women of HR shout out~

I am down to 157 blogs in the reader and they are not all HR (!) A few non-trench HR blogs that I read regularly are:

    Leadership: Michael Hyatt
    Great Writing: Annarchy
    Family Travel: Caio Bambino
    Incentives: I2I Incentive Intelligence

Looking forward to see what other blogs your readers call out!

    • I really enjoy the Women of HR – not just because of the great content, but also the opportunity for many who don’t have their own blogs (but have a voice and information worth sharing) to be heard.

I’m a big Fan of Michael Hyatt’s as well and love that he is such a transparent and giving CEO who is involved in social media.

And of course there is no other blog (that I’m aware of) like Paul Hebert’s Incentive Intelligence. Paul has the market cornered in a very important space – rewards, recognition and motivation. Consistently smart, good stuff!

I’ll have to check out your other two suggestions. Thanks for adding to my blog reading habit! 🙂

  3. I always have the worst memory. I’m that guy saying “Have you read that one thing by that one gal? It was REALLY good!” Very helpful.

I read a lot so these are just a few of my favorites…

Renegade HR – Maybe I’m just on a simplicity kick but it really speaks to me.

HR Ringleader – Trish brings the heat. I like the posts a ton.

Welcome to the Occupation – Paul Smith is a really fantastic writer.

Modite – It’s a great non-HR blog that I enjoy. Rebecca’s readers are thoughtful too.

Infobox – Mike Krupa is my homeboy and he speaks technology to me.

    • Nice list Lance! I follow all of your recommendations except for Modite, so thanks for adding to my addiction. 🙂 Looks like a great blog and I’ll definitely check it out. I agree that Chris, Trish, Paul and Mike do a great job of bringing different perspectives and styles to the HR blogging space.

And just like Trish, you’ll always be MY HR Guy to me as well!

  4. Thanks Lance! You’re always one of my faves too and will always be “MY” HR guy. That said, there are a few ouside the normal ones that always come up that I love:

Joe Gerstandt- Love the look of his new site and his content (predominantly about diversity and inclusion) always includes something new for me to learn.

And the British phenom The HRD- This is a brash approach to HR and it will keep us all on our toes.

Thanks for sharing new blogs Jen!!

    • Great suggestions Trish! Joe’s blog is one that should be in every business person’s selections. I can’t think of anyone else that is blogging about diversity and inclusion in such a thoughtful and challenging way.

I just recently discovered My Hell Is Other People and think that there is a place for anonymous HR blogs where the writer can share unfiltered thoughts and opinions. And The HRD certainly is unfiltered!

  6. Good post about the HR blogging community. I read a large number of blogs and I find it difficult to rank my favorites. Most of the blogs listed here I read on a regular basis. So instead, I thought I would take the opportunity to share some blogs that are new or are gaining momentum or deserve some more attention.

    Fastfood HR by John Nykolaiszyn
    HR Buoy by Chris Frede
    China Gorman
    Lean HR by Dwane Lay
Brian McNaught’s Gay & Transgender Issues in the Workplace Blog

  7. Jen –

Thanks for the shout out to the Capitalist and FOT. I remember the old days. You had to save your draft after each word and there weren’t simple tools for RSS like Feedburner… 🙂

I’ll throw a couple out – KnowHR by Frank Roche is always good read, as is John Sumser at HR Examiner for a deeper dive…

Thanks again for the mention…. KD

  8. While there are too many HR blogs out there to count- there are few that I turn to on a fairly regular basis. Not many talk about things that I am actually dealing with or that I can relate to. However- all that are mentioned here are on my permanent list.
